Investing in the Future Through Apprenticeships
When 15-year-old Michael Northing, affectionately known as Mick, walked through the doors of Boneham & Turner as an apprentice in January 1963, he began a journey that would span 60 years and leave a lasting impact on generations of engineers.
Starting his career as an apprentice toolmaker, Mick's dedication, skill and passion for engineering saw him progress through the business, becoming Chargehand, Manufacturing Team Leader and ultimately leading the company's Shim Department until his retirement at the remarkable age of 75.
His contribution to Boneham & Turner extends far beyond the roles he held. Throughout his career, Mick mentored countless young engineers, passing on invaluable knowledge, craftsmanship and a passion for precision engineering, and now that commitment to developing future talent has come full circle, as he continues to support the business by sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience with his grandson.
The Next Generation
Following in his grandfather's footsteps, Kyle Northing was introduced to engineering through Boneham & Turner, working part-time with the business while completing his college studies. After discovering a real passion for engineering, Kyle has chosen to pursue a Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship through @West Notts College, and we are delighted to welcome him as the newest apprentice at Boneham & Turner, continuing a proud family tradition.
Kyle's story reflects what apprenticeships are all about - providing opportunities to learn, grow and build rewarding careers in engineering.
“I chose to do an apprenticeship as I want to gain knowledge, skills and understanding of all the machines, as well as having a qualification to back it all up”
“It’s exciting to be working in the same place as my Grandad, especially with the respect and longevity he has with the company. I look forward to gaining knowledge from him and strive to be better than him!”
As a fourth-generation family-owned business with more than 100 years of engineering heritage, Boneham & Turner remains committed to investing in people. Apprenticeships play a vital role in securing the future of manufacturing, allowing experienced engineers to pass on their skills while creating exciting career opportunities for young people within our local community.
By nurturing emerging talent today, we're helping to build the skilled workforce that will drive British engineering forward for generations to come.
"Mick's career is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through an apprenticeship. His dedication, knowledge and willingness to mentor others have had a lasting impact on our business and our people.
Seeing Kyle begin his own engineering journey with Boneham & Turner is incredibly rewarding and perfectly demonstrates why we continue to invest in apprenticeships. Developing the next generation of engineers is essential -not only for the future of our business, but for the future of UK manufacturing as a whole."
