National Aviation Day 2023

19 August 2023
National Aviation Day is an American national holiday held on August 19th that celebrates the world-changing achievements of Orville and Wilbur Wright. In 1903, the Wright brothers defeated the odds by inventing the world’s first successful "motor-operated aeroplane." Over three decades later, Franklin D. Roosevelt cemented this event in American history by dedicating Orville’s birthday, the 19th of August, to all things flight.

We thought we would take some time today to take a look at some of the companies propelling the aviation industry into the future.

Metafuels

Metafuels is a start-up dedicated to creating sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with the mission of affordable net-zero aviation. Its three founders have decades of experience in the energy sector, with particular interest in the decarbonization of energy, chemicals, and heavy industry. Their aerobrew technology "has the potential to provide a lifecycle carbon reduction of up to 95%" when compared to traditional jet fuel.

Skydweller

Skydweller develops turn-key solutions for government operations, telecommunications, and emergency services. Using AI for autonomous navigation and solar power, the aircraft can assist in telecommunications, emergency services, and government tasks, including maritime patrol, and provide "ultra-high bandwidth" internet access across the globe.

teTra

Founded in 2018, Tokyo-based teTra is a start-up aiming to create "a truly valuable personal transportation service." Their eVTOL, the Mk-5, is crafted from aluminium and carbon-fibre-reinforced polymers, with power generated by a 13.5 kWh battery. This means up to 100 miles of silent, emission-free travel. The Mk-5 is also easy to manufacture, making mass production an achievable objective. The Mk-5 could have applications in first-responder transportation to emergencies, particularly those in areas hard to navigate by ground.

So, this National Aviation Day, take a moment to reflect on the importance of ambition. No matter what industry you are in, the story of The Wright Brothers is a great reminder that with determination and hard work, your goals can be achieved.
