Boneham supports aspiring engineers of the future

by Andy Lunt | Mar 08, 2018

2018 sees a yearlong campaign by government and industry to widen the UK’s pool of engineers by infusing young people with the mind-set that Engineering is an exciting and rewarding career. The Year of Engineering looks to help fill the skills gap void. Focus is placed on demonstrating to young people that many forms of engineering are incredibly fulfilling and fast paced, one such form is Motorsport.

Boneham & Turner helped support the young minds of Brunts Academy in Mansfield as they took part in the F1 in Schools Challenge. Spanning age ranges 9 to 19 the core objective of the challenge is to change the perceptions of science, technology and engineering, by creating an enjoyable and exciting learning environment for young people to develop an informed view about careers in engineering, F1, science, technology and marketing. The F1 in Schools organisation is a social enterprise which teams up with committed industry partners to offer exciting and challenging educational experiences through the higher profile magnetism of Formula One.

Teams must raise sponsorship and manage budgets to fund research, travel and accommodation.

The challenge inspires students to use computer aided design and IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacture, branding, graphics, sponsorship, marketing, leadership/teamwork, media skills and financial strategy. The key is then to apply them in a practical, imaginative, competitive and exciting way.

The Golden Wings Racing F1 Team sponsored by Boneham, represented the Brunts Academy in the Regional Finals “The students had a fantastic day racing their F1 car which has had months of blood, sweat and laughs put into it. They gained so much knowledge from their first final”.
